India, Israel share similar culture March 30, 2017 09:25

Indian-origin United States Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley said that the Indian and Israeli cultures share “many similarities” and people of both the nations believe in professionalism and rarely “back down from a fight.” While there are many "good things" about the people of the two countries, they are also "aggressive" and "stubborn", she said. In her address to American Israel Public Affairs Committee Policy Conference she said that, “she is the daughter of Indian parents, who reminded her brothers, her sisters and her everyday that, how blessed they were to live in this country. “The truth is, I have seen so many similarities between the Israeli culture and the Indian culture." In response to a question Haley said “We are very close knit. We love our families. We have a strong work ethic. We believe in professionalism and philanthropy, and giving back. So that's all the good things. We're aggressive. We're stubborn. And we do not back down from a fight." She also ruled that the Iranian deal had only empowered the Iranians. "It's concerning. And the reason it's concerning, is because when the Iran deal took place, all it did was empower Iran, and it empowered Russia. And it emboldened Iran to feel like they could get away with more," she said. "It is - you can put sanctions on a country. To take sanctions away, it's very hard to go back and put sanctions back on. So what we have said is, we're going to watch them like a hawk. We're going to make sure that every single thing they do is watch, processed and dealt with," she said. She said that the United States will not take its number one democratic friend in the Middle East to tackle the threats to peace and security. "I think what you're seeing is they're all backing up a little bit. The Israel-bashing is not as loud. They didn't know exactly what I meant outside of giving the speech, so we showed them. So when they decided to try and put a Palestinian in one of the highest positions that had ever been given at the UN, we said no and we had him booted out," she said. NRIs not eligible for Aadhaar Card March 30, 2017 07:53

Millions of NRIs living across the world need not bother about their Aadhaar identity card, as it is not applicable to them, a top Indian official said. CEO of Unique Identification Authority of India, Dr. Ajay Bhushan Pandey said that “According to Aadhaar Act, only residents of India are entitled to get an Aadhaar number. Non Residential Indians cannot get an Aadhaar because they are not entitled to get it.” The Unique Identification Authority is responsible for the enrollment process and authentication of data for India’s unique identification system, Aadhaar and maintaining the nation’s Central Identities Data Repository. According to Section 3.1 of Aadhaar Act 2016, only a resident of India shall be entitled to obtain an Aadhaar number. The act does not specifically and explicitly exempt NRIs from the enrollment, as Dr. Pandey was referring to the fact that an Indian would be considered as an NRI, if the person did not stay for at least 182 days in India in the preceding year as per other relevant laws, including the Income Tax Act. As government orders never specifically exempted NRIs from Aadhaar enrollment, there was a rumor that NRIs also had to get the card. Several Indian expatriates expressed their concerns about the latest move by the Indian government to make Aadhaar card mandatory for accessing several services and transactions. Dr. Pandey explained that the authority was not supposed to issue Aadhaar card to NRIs. “NRIs cannot get an Aadhaar card.” While applying for an Aadhaar card, Indians have to make a declaration in the application stating that they are a resident of India. The declaration reads: “I confirm that I have been residing in India for at least 182 days in the preceding 12 months.” However, when it was pointed out that NRIs have already obtained the unique identity card, Dr Pandey said: “The legal position is that they were not supposed to apply for the card. They have given a declaration that they have stayed in India for 182 days. Dr. Pandey said that he was not sure, if Indian expatriates would face any legal action for “illegally obtaining the card”. But technically there is a violation; they should not have taken it,” he added. “I will have to see in what circumstances NRIs obtained the card,” when asked if the authority would initiate any legal action. NRIs, who have obtained the Aadhaar card cannot cancel it as, there is no provision to cancel Aadhaar card. “Once generated, Aadhaar number will exist forever,” Dr. Pandey said. Dr. Pandey made it clear that NRIs need not worry about access being denied to government services for not having an Aadhaar card. It is the responsibility of the relevant departments to give exemption to NRIs in this regard, he added. Indian-origin South African anti-apartheid activist passes away AMandeep

Indian-Origin South African Anti-Apartheid Activist Passes Away March 28, 2017 13:48

Ahmed Kathrada an Indian-origin South African anti-apartheid activist, who was one of Nelson Mandela’s closest aides, passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in Johannesburg at the age of 87. He died after a short illness following brain surgery. Kathrada was among those activists, who were jailed alongside Mandela in the Rivonia trail in 1964 that drew worldwide attention and highlighted the brutal legal system under the apartheid regime. He spent 26 years and three months in jail, 18 of which were spent on Robben Island After the end of the apartheid regime, he served as a parliamentary counselor from 1994 to 1999 to President Mandela in the first African National Congress ANC government. "This is a great loss to the ANC, the broader liberation movement and South Africa as a whole," Neeshan Balton, head of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, said in a statement. "'Kathy' was an inspiration to millions in different parts of the world." His activism against the white-minority apartheid regime started at the age of 17, when he was one of 2,000 "passive resisters" arrested in 1946 for defying laws that discriminated against Indian South Africans. The African National Congress was banned in 1960, and two years later Kathrada was held under “house arrest”. Later, he went underground to continue the struggle as a member of the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). On July 1963, Kathrada and other senior activists were arrested during a secret meeting at Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, a Johannesburg suburb. At the famous Rivonia trial, eight of the accused were sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labor on Robben Island. His fellow prisoners included Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Denis Goldberg. Derek Hanekom, a fellow veteran activist and now a government minister, said that he had lost a "revolutionary mentor and dear friend". "Comrade Kathy was a gentle, humane and humble soul. He was a determined revolutionary who gave his entire life to the liberation struggle in our country," Hanekom said. Kathrada was a moral figurehead of the anti-apartheid movement, said fellow Robben Island prisoner Laloo "Isu" Chiba "He has been my strength in prison, my guide in political life and my pillar of strength in the most difficult moments of my life. Now he is gone," Chiba, 89, said in a statement from the foundation. Kathrada obtained four university degrees, while he was in prison. He will be buried, according to the Islamic religious rights. Few things about Ahmed Kathrada you must know: i.Born in 1929, the fourth of six children ii.Joined the Young Communist League aged 12 iii.At 17, part of protests against a discriminatory law iv.Received suspended sentence in 1952 for organizing anti-apartheid defiance campaign v.Arrested in 1963 for being part of armed struggle and put on trial alongside Nelson Mandela vi.Released from prison in 1989 vii.Joined the government as President Mandela's adviser in 1994 AMandeep

The hottest season of the year is here and it is a challenging time for those, who have a problem of sweaty hands and feet. This makes something as simple as shaking hands with someone a huge embarrassment. If you are looking for ways to deal with the sweating problem, here are few effective home remedies, you must try. 1. Baking Soda Baking soda is alkaline in nature and it can prove to be an effective remedy for sweaty hands and feet. Mix 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda in warm water and dip your hands/feet for about 20 to 30 minutes. Keep rubbing them with the solution. Afterwards, pat them dry. 2. Rose Water You can purchase organic rosewater from stores or make your own rose water by boiling rose petals in water and straining it. Use a cotton swab to apply the rose water on your palms and feet. It has a cooling impact on your skin. 3. Cold Water It is the simplest way, you just dip your sweaty hands and feet in cold water for 15 to 20 minutes in a day. This will relieve the problem to a great extent. 4. Talcum/Cornstarch Powder Both Talcum and Corn starch work in the similar way as they help keep your skin dry. Just dust them on your palms and feet. Try to use non-perfumed talcum powder, as it is better and more natural, making it safe for frequent usage. 5. Lemon Lemon can be used in three ways to control the problem of sweaty hands and feet. 1.Take lemon and orange peels and dry them. After they turn hard and brittle, powder them. Dust the powder on your hands and feet. Store the powder in an airtight container. 2.Mix lemon juice with vodka and rub it on your hands. Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it away. 3.Mix lemon juice with salt and rub it on your hands. After it gets dry, wash it away. 6. Tea Bags Tea bags can also used to rinse or wipe sweaty hands and feet to control the problem. Alternatively, put 3 to 4 black tea bags in hot water and soak your palms or feet in it every day for 30 minutes. 7. Apple Cider Vinegar Apply apple cider vinegar on your hands and feet and leave it to dry. Then, wash it away with water. It keeps the skin pores tight and helps to lessen sweating. Do it every day. 8. Sandalwood Powder Sandalwood paste has always been used by people on their foreheads to keep it cool. It is known to lessen perspiration and due to this property, it is an effective remedy for sweaty palms and feet. Mix the powder with water, lime juice or rosewater. Apply it on the sweaty patches, let it dry and wash it off. 9. Tomato Juice Drink tomato juice every day or dip your hands/feet in tomato juice, as it has a cooling impact on the body. Tomato juice also contains sodium, which helps to keep the palms and feet dry. 10. Potato Take potato slices and rub them against your sweaty hands and feet. Let the juice stay for some time and after that, wash it away. AMandeep
